How to describe an intermittent phone or laptop fault

Help a repairer reproduce an intermittent device problem with a simple fault log covering timing, charging, error messages and recent changes.

Published by The Phone People ·

“It sometimes stops working” is a real problem, but it gives a repairer little to reproduce. A short fault log can make an assessment more useful without requiring technical knowledge.

Record the pattern

Note the time, the task you were doing and how long the device had been running. Say whether it was plugged in, running on battery, connected to Wi-Fi or using mobile data. Record the exact error message when possible. Do not include passwords or private conversations in screenshots.

Use a simple example

Instead of “charging is broken”, write: “The charging symbol appears, then disappears after about 30 seconds. This happened three times today with the cable I normally use. The phone was on the desk and the connector was not being moved.” This is an example of a useful description, not a diagnosis.

Explain what changed

  • Did the issue start after a drop, liquid exposure, update or previous repair?
  • Does it happen in one app or across the whole device?
  • Does restarting temporarily change the behaviour?
  • Have you already tried another compatible accessory? Tell the repairer what you observed.

Preserve evidence without causing more damage

If safe, take a short video of the problem using another device. Back up important data while you can access it. Do not repeatedly force a failing connector, open the device, or keep testing equipment that is visibly damaged or unusually hot. Describe those observations and ask for an inspection.

Set a clear approval boundary

Tell the repairer what outcome matters most: reliable charging, recovering files, fixing a display or checking whether repair is economical. Ask them to contact you before work exceeds the agreed amount. A fault log supports diagnosis; it does not prove which component needs replacing.
