How to prepare your phone for repair
A practical phone repair handover checklist: verify your backup, protect accounts, record the fault and agree on testing before handing over your device.
Published by The Phone People ·
A repair appointment is easier when you know what to hand over and what to keep private. This checklist applies whether you use a local repairer or visit The Phone People in Sydney.
1. Verify a backup before the appointment
Check the date of your most recent successful backup, then make a fresh one if the phone is working. Check photos, contacts and important files separately; a backup does not necessarily include every app’s information. Messaging and authentication apps can have their own transfer or recovery process.
Use the current instructions for backing up an iPhone or backing up an Android device. Keep recovery details somewhere you can reach without the phone. Do not factory-reset a device with unverified or irreplaceable data.
2. Write a clear fault description
Record when the problem began, whether it happens every time, and what happened just before it started. For an intermittent fault, note whether it happens while charging, using a particular app or moving the device. Mention previous repairs, drops or liquid exposure so the repairer can plan the inspection.
3. Agree on access and testing
Ask which functions need testing and whether you can unlock the phone in person. Do not put passwords, account recovery codes or device passcodes into a quote form or email. Follow the repairer’s agreed process for access; do not remove account protection merely because an unsolicited message asks you to.
4. Confirm the handover details
- Confirm the exact model, estimate, inspection fee if any, and how extra work will be approved.
- Ask which accessories are needed and record anything you leave with the device.
- Keep the booking reference private and confirm how you will receive progress updates.
- Tell the repairer before handover if preserving data is your main priority.
If the phone will not turn on
Explain that you could not make a fresh backup. Do not agree to erasing or restoring it until you understand the effect on your data. A repair may still involve data loss; no checklist can guarantee recovery.
