Repair or replace your phone? A practical decision guide
Compare repair cost, remaining device life, software support, data access and replacement costs before deciding whether to repair or replace a phone.
Published by The Phone People ·
The cheapest quoted repair is not always the best decision, and a damaged screen does not automatically mean a phone should be replaced. Compare the complete cost of both choices and how well the device still meets your needs.
Start with the problem you need solved
Write down what works, what fails and what you need from the phone. One damaged component is a different decision from several faults plus insufficient storage. An inspection may be needed before a repairer can distinguish a replaceable part from a board or software issue.
Compare complete costs
- Repair: include diagnosis, the agreed part and labour, any transport, and other known faults.
- Replacement: include the device, accessories you must replace, setup and data transfer, less any realistic trade-in value.
- Time: consider parts availability, time without the phone, and whether you need a temporary device.
For example, an illustrative $200 repair on a phone that still meets your needs may compare well with a $700 replacement. Those numbers alone do not decide the outcome if the phone also has other faults or no longer receives the updates you need. These figures are examples, not our repair prices.
Check the expected useful life
Check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model, your available storage and compatibility with essential apps. Compare that with your intended period of use. Avoid assuming every model from a brand receives the same support.
Separate data recovery from device replacement
A replacement phone does not bring back information that was never backed up. If your priority is access to photos or files, tell the repairer before approving work. You may need a data-focused assessment even if you intend to replace the phone later.
Questions to ask before authorising a repair
- What does this price include, and is it an estimate or a confirmed quote?
- What part option is being fitted, and what limitations should I expect?
- What happens if inspection reveals additional damage?
- What warranty or repair terms apply to the work?
Use our current price list as a starting point, then confirm the exact device and fault. Prices on this site are in Australian dollars; service availability is confirmed before booking.
